I received the below email from a non-member of our site who saw our scammer forums:

"Actually, I read ur post at this site regarding a scam where people are invited to conferences and later are cheated of their money. I need ur help. I want 2 know something regarding a conference to be held at Miami and Guinea Bissau on youth suicides and child labour.

It all started when my dad got a invitation for a conference abroad. We stay in India. She contacted him through a penpal site and invited him for this conference. She told that she was a one of the organisors.

She and the other conference organisors contacted my dad and told him that the conference is never advertised and is only by invitation. They told that the conference is to be held at Massachusetts, USA on youth suicides followed by a conference to be held at Guinea Bissau on child trafficking at the end of January, 2007. They also told him that all his expenses and accomodation would be taken care of in USA but the hotel reservation in Guinea Bissau has to be done. The flight tickets would be sponsored.

Then later it was informed that the conferences have been postporned to Feb, 2007 where the conference on youth suicides to be held at Massachusetts, USA is going to be held at Miami but the other one on child trafficking in the same venue, only the dates would be changed.

They told him however not to contact the US Embassy in any way.

They told him to pay a sum of 150$ per day ( 5 days period) for that suite for five for the hotel rervation as he was taking some others too with him. Okay, later they informed him about a deposit of 500$ per head as guaruntee deposit fees as it was required by the immigration Dept., after this payment was done they asked him to deposit another amount of 375$ per head, as health insurance and anti terrorist deposit. That too was paid.

All the transactions were made to the Hotel in Guinea Bissau. Why not to the US embassy? Now, they are asking him to pay a sum of 589$ as visa transaction fees. The others except the reservation at the Hotel in Guinea Bissau and this particular Visa transaction fees are told to be refundable. All these payments are being made to the Hotel in Guinea Bissau.

They have asked the amounts one by one after a interval of a week or two. Now they are telling that the batches are full and his group has been transferred to the next batch and the conference will commence from March 2nd. If they don't pay the 589$ as visa transaction fees then the Visas would not be stamped and the last batch too will get filled.

The dates are being changed from Jan to Feb to March.

I want to know whether this conference is fake or not? I have read in some forums that there is no such conference and the organisors just keep changing the dates and hotels.

The replies/posts in those forums have really scared me. They are telling that this may be a scam though the organisors seem very genuine. I don't want to believe this but cannot help it. Actually my dad is not alone. Some students, teachers are with him and he is responsible for them. Their money too has gone into this.

Can you please help me. Please treat this as urgent. My dad still believes that this conference is true. I want it to be like that but I want to know if they are faking all this.

If you know someone/some site that can help us please let me know. I will be very grateful to you. I need ur help. I have given u all my info. I want to help my dad!!!! Pleeeeeeeeease help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bye. "

I simply did not know how to respond to this poor person. I replied:

"I cannot answer this specific situation, but I do know that this sounds very much like the way the scammers handle things. They keep changing the dates so they can keep milking you for more and more money and have a reason for not sending you tickets. I mean, January has come and gone and what other excuse would they have for asking for more money if you had already attended in January, or already found out there was no such conference in January.

They said:

>>They told him however not to contact the US Embassy in any way.

CONTACT THE EMBASSY IMMEDIATELY. They will likely inform you this is a scam.

If your Dad made payment through credit card, most credit cards allow you to report a charge as fraud and get your money back. But I don't know how he made payment, and most likely not using credit card. Instruct him not to send another penny. He needs to report this scam and all information he has to the EMBASSY IMMEDIATELY!

May God bless you,

Nannette"
