Thank you, Rusty RN, for stating the facts. Actually, everything you said was stated correctly in the New York Daily News. Our reporters here in NY did their digging. Yes, we had the media hype, but we also had the facts. If the courts had not gotten involved, Terri would have died with privacy and dignity. I had a cousin with breast cancer who was sent home with a morphine drip when they realized that she had only a few days to live. Two days later, she slipped into coma ... no feeding tube was permitted because we knew it would just prolong a painful existence. She had time to plan her own funeral before she became comatose. Yes, it was painful, and I miss her dearly even though it's been 18 months since her death, but she is resting painfree and peacefully, awaiting the call of the only one that can give life ... Jesus himself. The family could have kept her on life support, but to us, we realized that such a decision would have preserved only breath but not life.

Were it not for Terri's parents (and yes, I remember seeing hours of the video clip a few years ago ... her mother actually touched her face to turn it towards her at one point. Sad desparation!) none of this would have made the media pages/TV. If nothing else, Terri's story should encourage all of us to make a living will and make our wishes known to our family in the face of several sworn witnesses with affidavits. Better too many legal papers than none at all. Terri is resting now, peacefully.

As was previously stated in this thread, the competent spouse does have the final decision regarding medical care directives. The judge, the courts, and the legislature overstepped their boundaries by involving themselves and making their arbitrary decisions. There is much I could go into about the legal system, the constitution, and more regarding this case and others, but I will limit this to the issue directly at hand.

One thing that disturbs me about this is all the "I heard" statement and then people thinking they know what's going on. Just because the guy down the street said "I heard..." doesn't make it a fact. Do your own research people.

"I heard that Michael stopped the treatment when he got a one million dollar judgement." Opps... you heard wrong. That money has long since been spent on care and evaluations over the last FIFTEEN YEARS. Again... do your own research people.

If he was only in it for the money then please explain why he didn't take the well over $1,000,000 dollars Terri's parents offered him in exchange for turning over all rights of care for her to them. Anyone care to take a shot at that one? I didn't think so.

Sadly, most everyone I've talked to about this simply repeats media soundbites and the "I heards" of friends and people they overhear talking about it. It's like anything else... if you want to be informed do your OWN research.

She was not in therapy. She was not walking. She was not talking. Over the past 7 years she has been examined by scores of doctors which have ALL stated the same thing... she has no cerebral functioning. Repeated scans of her head have very clearly shown that the cortex of her brain no longer exists, it is basically a mass of gelatinous material. Those are the medical FACTS regarding the case. Facts, I might add, that the media didn't discuss. Why? Because then this wouldn't have been a good story to tug at the heart strings of America and get ratings.

Her family released a video a minute or two long which the claim proved the was coherant and could follow a balloon and respond to verbal stimuli. It was all over the media. They played a 10 second clip of that video and made the emotional appeal... "Save Terri!" Ready for the facts on that one????

The minute or so video that her family released was compliled from over EIGHT HOURS of video. Guess what the rest of it showed.... that's right... absolutely no cognition. Absolutely no mental function. Absolutely no ability to follow a balloon or respond to verbal stimuli.

The video that her family released was a compilation of a few times that her movements happened to coincide with their speaking her name and waving a balloon in front of her face. Other than the couple of times when she appeared to respond, it's EIGHT HOURS of video in which she does not respond to the repeated saying of her name. It is EIGHT HOURS of not following the balloon. It is EIGHT HOURS of not reponding to tactile stimulation.

The video that her family released was nothing more than a ruse to build a swell of intellectually devoid emotionalism. And it WORKED!

As to her death by lack of nutrition... again more emotionalism and people forming ignorant (meaning lack of knowledge facts) opinions based on emotion rather than facts.

Some facts regarding her death and dying...

1.) the repeated scans of her brain over the past 7 years have shown she lacks the ability to be aware of pain stimulus.
2.) within a few days of the feeding tube being removed a person will go into acidosis and slip into a coma. The reports that she was alive and well and fighting hard for her life were nothing more than emotional propoganda. I mean, look at the source... the Rev. Jesse Jackson! LOL Give me a break... I am a nurse technican and am about to become an R.N. and there is NO WAY she wasn't in a coma within a few days of the removal of the tube. Without the water, her kidneys shut down very quickly, as did her liver, and she slipped into a coma. So even if she did have mental cognition (which she didn't) she wouldn't have been in pain. I've provided medical care until death for people who have their feeding tubes removed so I know what I'm talking about.

Lastly, Terri made it known that she didn't want to be kept alive in a vegitative state or by artificial means. Again, more disinformation that was spread by the media was that there was no proof she ever made this statement. WRONG AGAIN!!!

Do your research and you will discover that she made this statement in front of her husband AS WELL as a couple of other people. People, I might add, who signed AFFIDAVITS that corraborated Michaels assertion that this was her wish. Did you ever hear that on the mainstream media???? NO!!! Why not???? Ask yourself that people.

As with anything else, it is unwise to be led by emotion, popular opinion, and the mainstream media. Don't be sheeple who follow lemming-like to the directives of the media and emotionalism. Get informed. Get the facts. Knowledge is the most powerful weapon we have against ANY enemy... be it this situation or any other... Satan included.

The bottom line is

1.) Terri died 15 years ago, and the organic shell that housed her has remained behind. Because a body is breathing and has a heartbeat does NOT mean there is anyone home. It's like leaving the porch light on when you leave your house. Looks occupied... but isn't. And;
2.) The judges and the courts had no right to interfere. If you think they did, then you will have no reason to complain when it is YOU who is targeted by the courts and judges. You can't justify judges and courts overstepping their boundaries because the desired end is congruent with your emotional opinion on the subject.

Knowledge is power... don't be weak.

I have a daughter like terri, who I take care of at home, nobody knows these kids like their own mother.

terri's mother kept telling everyone that her daughter was not brain dead, being brain damaged or retarded is not brain dead. She asked (can a brain dead person smile?)

When that mother looked into her daughter's eyes, as I do everyday with my daughter, we still see the person they once were, but trapped in this body, that will not move or walk or do what they used to do, you know their little spirt is still there, they are alive, they have feelings, they cry, they smile.

What terri's husband allowed to by done to her, starveing her to death, was murder.

I believe it is GOD'S hands, it's not up to us to say if one of God's childre should live or die.

The Schiavo case was a tragic one indeed, but I think it may have been a blessing to Christians in that this could very well be a glimpse into the future. We all know that there will be a death decree placed upon those who do not conform to the will of the roman church. This action will be taken be the federal government. The schiavo case gave us a look at how it could possibly be done. It begins with talk in the community, on local radio and tv stations and moves on to a national debate. First local governments and courts begin to cry for so called justice and soon the congress will get involved at the request of the officals all proded along of course by the roman church. I think what we are seeing here is another spoke in the wheel of events that is attempting to establish precedence for later justifying their actions for establishing the final decree.

Given the fact that decisions to allow a loved one's life to terminate occur literally hundreds of times each day in the US, the real tragedy is the media frenzy that was generated over what should have essentially remained within the family. Right or wrong as it may have been in this particular case, the competent spouse does have the legal entitlement to make such a decision and not the parents. The judge who initially ordered the feeding tube reinserted was the only one out of step with the rest of the judiciary involved. Congress overstepped themselves badly by their intervention attempts and may have shot the GOP "in the foot" so to speak. The other courts showed Constitutionally proper judicial restraint by not stepping in.
The medical expert's diagnosis of "persistent vegitative state" meant that while Terri could breath on her own, she could not chew, nor could she swallow "even a drink of water", nor could she feel hunger or thirst, and therefore would have experienced no physical pain in her final days! Her "interactions" were a stimulus/response condition with no cognitive base. While I may have personal questions regarding Michael Schiavo's morals and ethics as to his personal lifestyle and also whether his wife indeed requested not to be kept alive under those conditions, ultimately he alone will be accountable to God for his decision and we are all obliged to leave it at that. The only relevant issue left for us is; what communications (and legalities) must take place in our personal relationships to prevent such an event from reoccuring in our own lives? Advance Directive forms are available free from several download sites.
May God be with us all and may His Spirit guide us in our choices.
