I don't know what your views are on camping, but if you've never spent a night in the Californai Redwood forest you don't know what you're missing! Seriously! My favorite spot is Jedidiah Smith Redwoods part located in the NW corner of California just out of Cresent City. (Besides, it's close to Oregon, where I live) But if you prefer to sleep in motels you can still take day hikes and take some wonderous driving trips thru the Avenue of the Giants in Humbolt County to the south of that! When you get back to the midwest you'll look at 40 foot tall trees and think they are shrubs! If you absolutely need to be nearer the more populated cities I suppose you could visit the Sequoias down in central CA, but I haven't made it down that far yet!

Being Canadian but travelling many places US/Canada, Africa, Europe, etc. I would say some of the most beautiful scenery is in the Canadian Rockies. Also, lots of hiking, outdoorsy stuff if you want to really 'bond' as a family....But avoid some of the really 'touristy'places like Banff (unless you're into crowds in the summer) and head for Tonasket and less busy places in the Rockies.

Oh, Prince Edward Island is a gorgeous place to visit. also pretty busy in the summer but you can drive across the Confederation Bridge. Largest Bridge across salt water and take the ferry, too if you want. Anne of Green Gables house is on the island, too, and many lighthouses and scenic beaches, green potato fields, quaint island stores... Some friends and I did a biking trip around some of the Island. Make sure to see the North Cape if you go sometime. The view is AWESOME!

Wherever you go, have a great time!

Less than a month after my 26th birthday, I crossed into my 49th state and have since visited #50. I have visited nearly all the National Parks in the country and have, what I feel is a fair knowledge of our great country as well as much of Canada. In response to a question from a friend not long after I returned to this "Great Land", as to whether I still liked it, my response was that the only place I would rather be is at the foot of Father's throne in Heaven. Alaska is unbeatable for a vacation every possible opportunity for the rest of your life and you would not see it all or get bored with it ever looking the same. Most of the people are as great as the land itself.

A two nation tour visiting NY and ON would be nice. Letchworth Park is about 45 min south of Rochester and is called the "Grand Canyon of the East". It is a nice place to picnic and a 5-mile hiking trail will take you past all three waterfalls. Then there is Niagara Falls ON. The Marineland and Game Farm there is great. Toronto has a lot to do too. There is an Ontario Science Centre where you can experience things hands-on. There is much else to do there too. Then in the 1000 islands you could take a day to go fishing (either in NY or ON). Back in NY there are the finger lakes. The saying is that "Ithaca is gorges!"

  Hey Nannette,
Pick me, Higher Ground is a great place for family. We are located in the Ozark mountains close to an enormous lake, a wild and scenic Buffalo River, Old Ozark Mountain town with folk music on the square each night.

Our facilities have cabins, walking trails and waterfalls (mostly wet weather falls, but beautiful anyway) Chrisitan atmosphere and reasonably priced.
